VETERINARY CONSENT

VETERINARY SURGEONS ACT 1966

VETERINARY SURGERY (EXEMPTIONS) ORDER 2015

It is a legal requirement that veterinary permission is granted prior to any treatment, under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and Exemptions Order 2015. This legislation explains that veterinarians are the primary care givers for animals and therefore any practitioner that does not have consent prior to treatment is breaking the law.

McTimoney animal chiropractors and massage therapists are classed as paraprofessionals by the Veterinary Surgery (Exemptions) Order and are allowed to practice with prior consent from the animal’s veterinarian, with the exception of maintenance treatments.

Veterinary permission can be obtained by the owner or your practitioner. The owner's consent will be required prior to treatment to confirm that veterinary approval has been granted.

Paraprofessionals (including farriers, saddlers, dentists and other musculoskeletal practitioners) should work as part of a veterinary-led team to optimise animal welfare and performance.
